Bhutan Cancer Society in collaboration with READ Bhutan, Ministry of Health and JDWNRH has carried out a project on ” improving Access to prevention of breast and cervical cancer services for women and girls in economically and socially disadvantaged rural communities in Bhutan – Phase II”. The project was implemented in rural communities in three districts (Haa, Chukha and Wangdue).
BCS in collaboration with READ Bhutan has trained community workers on cervical cancer prevention and on behalf of BCS they will encourage villagers who have never done Pap smear to undergo screening.
A total of more than 500 women were reached with the gender friendly package of services (Targeted awareness program on cervical cancer prevention, self-breast examination demonstration, NCD screening and Pap smear test). The package of services was designed based on pilot project to improve access to cervical cancer screening in the communities.
Of the total, 65 women underwent colposcopy, 2 women underwent cold coagulation and 22 women were referred to Thimphu for surgical treatment of cervical precancers and a total of 100 males also benefited with NCD screening at the same time.
